A huge thank you to everyone for their suggestions on where I could look to for new subjects for side projects within the Star Wars realm, I intend to get to all of them at some point, I'm starting with the Pod racers, is that a strange place to start as it's a different time period and most of them died during the race, probably ! LOL but as you can see from the picture below, there were a lot of the same species in the crowd as the racers, and the Boonta Eve race, carries on even up to the time period of the Mandalorian !
First today I have Mawhonic, who is a Gran, as he is small for the species, I used a GW zombie as a dolly for this one, which saved on greenstuff, and made it quicker for sculpting.
Next today is Dud Bolt, who is a Vulptereen, this was a complete scratch build with frame and greenstuff.
Last today is Ben Quadrinarol, who is a Toong, this was also a full sculpt with frame and greenstuff.
I've had to cover the bad sculpting with paint to hide the scrapiness of the sculpts, but they will do as crowd fillers walking around the city. Here is a group shot to show their varying sizes.
There were 18 pod racers in the section of the movie, I can find a 3D print of Sebulba, and I can do children based off of the look of Anakin, these two are part of the 11 racers that get shown in the movie, there is 6 you don't even get a glimpse of, but I've found what they should look like as well, so expect to see more racers in the future. That's all for today, so until next time, stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave

Another excellent looking miniatures Dave!
ReplyDeleteYour SW collection is amazing!
Thank you Michal, it certainly has some obscure characters in it ! LOL
DeleteA brilliant start. The Vulptereen is my favourite, but they all look great.
ReplyDeleteThank you misterc, he was an interesting one to sculpt, what I thought were teeth, turned out to be tusks, on closer examination of the reference ! LOL
DeleteHot damn! Totally forgot there were such a "fantasy" creatures in Star Wars.
ReplyDeleteMost probably that's the reason I've never been big fan of those "new" episodes.
Nice paintjob tho! 😉
Thank you demi_morgana, the prequels had a lot more aliens in them compared to the original trilogy, which gives me a large resource to pull from ! LOL
DeleteYour alleged scrappiness is better than my best jobs!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, I've seen your work so don't believe that for a second ! LOL Currently struggling on the smoothness and finer detail, but hopefully can overcome that.
DeleteAll are great, but Dud Bolt is my fave.
ReplyDeleteCheers Roger
Thank you Roger, I know what you mean, just something appealing about his strangeness ! LOL
DeleteThese are great! Whilst the prequels in general were pants imo, there were some fun stuff in them that helped flesh out the SW setting immensely, like these alien species, previously not seen. Excited to see what you come up with next! (And if you make Sebulba, you HAVE to do his twin twi-leks he's seen walking about the racer-garage with.)
ReplyDeleteI think I have the "Art of Episode 1" book somewhere in storage.... Maybe that could offer some images and info on the other otherwise "unknown" racers? (I'll try to remember to have a nose about for it this weekend.)
Thank you Dai, at least the prequels were better than the sequels ! LOL Indeed there is some great resource there, as in the Mandolorian, and book of Boba Fett, whenever on Tatooine. For Sebulba was planning on purchasing a 3D print, but will look at doing the girls for you ! LOL
DeleteThank you for the offer mate, but have already found all the missing racers already, the forge was strong with my Googling ! LOL
(Good, cos I couldn't find the book this weekend afterall.... It's in a tub somewhere in the barn, but I'll be buggered if I can remember which!?)
DeleteThanks for looking mate, much appreciated.
DeleteNice work again here Dave. My fav of the bunch is (probably predicatably) the Ree-Yees family member!
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazael, Mawhonic was a fun one to sculpt and paint.
DeleteI wouldn’t have guessed that they weren’t cast sculpts from somewhere, so you did a good job! Podracing is so nostalgic for me haha, I played a lot of that game.
ReplyDeleteThank you SD, high praise indeed, but the sculpting is not my best, and the detailing is lacking, cleverly hidden by the painting ! LOL Glad I could give you some nostalgia.
DeleteI can't remember how old I was when Episode I came out. Middle school maybe? I was so hyped for it and one of the best parts of the movie was the podracing so I'm glad you're working on these. There was a Podracing video game for Nintendo 64 so I know all of the racers' names by heart (sadly!). I think you did Dud Bolt and Ben Quad justice here. As I recall neither had much like in the race itself but they can rest easy knowing they've been immortalized as miniatures by you! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, funny I was in middle school for episode four ! LOL Happy to send you down memory lane with these, and that you think I did them justice, mostly smoke and mirrors on my part ! LOL
DeleteAs an old git, I was in high school for Episode IV! These are excellent minis Dave! :-) For me, the podracing was the best bit of Episode I by far (actually probably the best bit of Episodes I to III)!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, only a few years ahead of me then mate ! LOL I think it is probably one of the most memorable scenes they did.
