THE RIGHT REFERENCE

The right reference can make a lot of difference, what do I mean, well if you've ever watched Star Wars you may know what a Dewback is, it's a lizard like creature that is large enough that a person can ride one. We first saw one in the desert sands of Tatooine being ridden by a Stormtrooper, but it was a background creature when the stormtroopers found the escape pod.

When they rereleased the extended versions, these creatures were now CGI, and there was a lot more of them. but the colours were very different, almost mottled grey and green.

The top reference didn't give me enough detail, and the bottom one, I wasn't keen on the colour, then I found this one on Wookiepedia.

Now armed with the right reference, I could paint my Dewback I recently got, and here are the results below.

And as I had the model out, why not a scenic shot.

Really enjoyed doing this one, and would like to get another 3, so I can have one of each rider type that comes in the box. That's all for todays post, so until next time, stay safe, and have fun !

Cheers Dave

    1. Thank you SD, indeed the right reference can truly inspire you, and now I've got so many of the parts I want, I should be able to do more of that type of picture.

  2. I think there's a lot to say about the evolution of (de)saturation of colours in the movies along the years, but on this particular subject, I believe you got the perfect reference and you certainly nailed it. Cool job!

    1. Thank you Suber, agreed on the evolution in movies, and it not always being positive, but every so often the right piece just falls into place at the right time, like now ! LOL

  5. I used to have the action figure of a Dewback and Stormtrooper. I wonder if I've still got that somewhere in my childhood home... You're spot-on about references being important and I think you painted big lizard to match the reference really well, Dave. That is one thing I enjoy about painting Fallout and LOTR personally and I would think it applies to Star Wars for you. It gives you a chance to bring something to life from our TV/Movie screens.

    1. Thank you Jeff, always wanted one as a child, but never got round to getting one, so I will probably make up for it now, and have multiple in this scale ! LOL I think you've hit the nail on thee head, we're trying to recreate what we have seen in our favourite films/shows and bring a sense of life to them.

That looks spot on, Dave! :-) That does look a really clear reference picture as well and you matched it up perfectly I think!

  7. Great work, Dave! Dewbacks have always been some of my favourite Star Wars creatures. Didn't know some of them had fur, very interesting!

    1. Thank you snapfit, I've liked them ever since the first time I saw them, so no surprise I had to have some in this scale ! LOL The original props had fur, but as they were on screen for such a short time and in the background, it was a detail easy to miss, the model was designed so the head and tail would move, but the mechanism broke in transport, so it got less screen time than intended.

    2. The stormtrooper book I got for my birthday is full of interesting little stories like these.

  8. I always loved Dewbacks since I was a kid. I mean, Stormtroopers riding Dinosaurs! Your one looks fantatic here, you've worked from the reference images for a naturalistic effect and it shows. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing him posed alongside two more!
