The next LOTR model is the Ringwraith on Fell Beast, this is the original metal release model with plastic wings, it needed a bit of refining on the joins, some areas needed to be trimmed and others more greenstuff added to hide the seam lines. I've tried to match the colours from the screen shot I found, and involved a lot of mixing of colours.
The wings took the longest time, with so many glaze layers to match the reference, but did manage to replicate the patterns.
The only addition to this model I did was to add in some reigns, these were made from folding some masking tape over in itself, and then cutting off the desired thickness, and sticking in place.
Below is the screenshot I used for reference.
Pleased with how this one turned out overall, but lots more to do, so until next time, stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Looks good to me!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil, it took a while, but glad to get it finished.
DeleteWhat a beast indeed! The work certainly paid off. This is not that an easy job, this is quite more than merely spraying it black; you managed to achieve the different tones and textures pretty well, I love the result!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, funny you should say being all black, as I recalled they were really dark, but when I started looking at the colours I would need, I found so many different ones, just goes to show when watching a movie, I don't see everything ! LOL
DeleteExcellent work on a massive beast!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain caveadsum1471
Thank you Iain, yes a large model, and awkward to hold when trying to paint ! LOL
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done, Dave! :-) I can well believe it's tricky to paint - I'm finding it tricky to get used to painting ships again, since they tend to be long and slender!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, the fun we all have as modellers, no one outside the hobby would believe us ! LOL
DeleteGreat job Dave. Came out great.
ReplyDeleteI got one of these models just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I’ll get around to it one day. 😀
Thank you Stewart, they do attract the dust don't they ! LOL I've got the Witch King one to paint at some point, which I bought myself, but I want to actually build the wings for it, to try and make it more accurate ( I might have stole it's wings for a conversion as well ! LOL)
DeleteGreat stuff, Dave. Tempted to dig my all-plastic version out having read about how you dealt with yours. Love these LotR posts. Always make me look at my LotR drawer to see if I could sneakily squeeze some in to my painting queue. LOL!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, the biggest trick with these is patience, as when I was working on the wings, I would get one glaze done, then not be able to do another until the following day, as you could brush off some of the glaze otherwise ! LOL
DeleteThose classic metal LOTR monsters can be a real pain to work with! Not that Warhammer ones are much better... The extra work on the wings really paid off too. On this model, they might be the most important thing to get right which is a strange thing to say.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, yes normally the main focus would be faces to draw the eye in, but due to a lack of face of the rider, and small face of the beast, the wings help frame the model to draw the eye in. Indeed any large model can be tricky, either awkward to hold, or so heavy, you can only do short sessions.
DeleteFantastic, and looks enough like a dragon to me to count as yet another of your submissions for Year of the Dragon!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith, I didn't want to assume it would count as a Dragon because of Smaug, but I'll take it as another entry, hopefully I can do something special in May as well ! LOL
DeleteSuch an impressive model and a top paint job too Dave.
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael, it was a fun challenge to do, and also good practice for the Witch King ! LOL
DeleteGreat job, Dave! The wings might have been quite a work, but they turned out really good. Love the patterns and the colors on them. These beasts look like what D&D calls "Wyverns". I'm not sure if that's anything official, as sometimes D&D would just came up with a name for something.
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, the wings were time consuming, but worth it to replicate the reference ! LOL Wyverns are indeed a thing from Folklore, the main difference between a Dragon and a Wyvern is a Dragon has four legs, plus a pair of wings, whereas a Wyvern has a pair of back legs and a pair of wings that also double as it's front legs when walking, or as I like to call it the Hollywood Dragon, as that's what they tend to use rather than the six limbed creature, as it's easier to animate ! LOL
DeleteThanks for clearing that up! I knew the anatomical difference, but I never knew if that was a D&D distinction or not. I can’t remember ever reading a book with a wyvern in it either, though it’s possible I just don’t remember it. Hmm, if you think about it…the Wyvern is like a reptilian bat! 😉
DeleteNo problem Brian, the Wyvern is from European folklore, where the six limbed Dragon was Britain, and Scandinavian countries had the Wyrm, every continent had a legend of a Dragon, but they vary greatly in shape and size, the Australian Dragon was shaped a lot like a Kangaroo ! LOL
DeleteInteresting, I was often confused by the use of "Wyrm". A little bit of googling turned up that early dragons (German/Norse myths) were basically large snakes. Roman/Christian influences impacted those myths and they were changed into the winged "Dragon" beasts that I'm more familiar with. Again, that was a quick delve, so I'm not sure how accurate all that is, but at least that gives me a better idea of some of the how/why.
DeleteIndeed, influences from different cultures has changed things over the years, the bible actually took the winged serpent from Aztec culture and added it in as well, and who can ever forget Hollywood's influences on Vikings having horns on their helmets ! LOL
DeleteReally great looking model, and you nailed the look of it!
ReplyDeleteThank you SD, once I've got a decent reference picture, it's just a case of working out the colours needed, and if I have the right one, or need to mix it ! LOL
DeleteFantastic work, the wings look amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you snapfit, they were time consuming, but worth it as they have become the main focal point.
