Continuing on with submissions for Keith's Monster May(hem) I've made and painted a Joopa, if your not aware of what one of these are, they are an underground creature that appeared in the series Star Wars Rebels.
A group of retired clones spend their days trying to catch these tasty creatures, and apparently they in turn like eating Lasat, which is why I've pictured it stood next to Zeb from the series.
While I've been working on this creature I've also managed to finish another character from the series AP5 who was an Imperial logistics droid who joined the rebel team. I started with one of my RA7 protocol droids as a basis, and then sculpted his larger head over the top.
That's all for this post, got some more monsters I'm working on that I hope to finish before the end of the challenge, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
That Joopa is spot on Dave! Poor Zeb LOL
ReplyDeleteAnother droid for the collection too eh? Looks good to me.
Thank you Dai. lets hope he's got some friends close by to help ! LOL
DeleteCan you ever have too many droids ! still some other droids needed
Well, the ttitle first had me confused but now I fear I may have some sleepless bights.
ReplyDeleteWhat a totally beilevable alien critter and an incredibly good paint-job; even though I can't say how close it is to the original (it's probably spot on) it looks great.
Thank you Joe, sorry about the nightmares ! The Star Wars universe really does have a diverse menagerie available for someone like me ! LOL
DeleteI don't dip into the animated Star Wars series so this was new to me and the Joopa is a bit scary looking for Star Wars but it is certainly a formidable looking worm I must say. Great job painting it up!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, the animated wasn't for everybody, the Rebels series started easy going, but developed into a very deep and thought provoking series, also gave a lot of information that is relevant to the Mandolorian series and the spin offs that are coming as well. As for the Joopa it always seemed to be the Star Wars version of a Graboid from Tremors
DeleteThat is brilliant fab work on the Joopa! You have captured the markings really well!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, used foam for the core, to keep it light, was lucky enough to find a detailed layout of the Joopa on line, which made doing them a lot easier
DeleteThat's an excellent model, Dave, so well made and painted! You've matched the look and colours perfectly. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, been wanting to do one of these for a while now, and Monster May(hem seemed the perfect excuse ! LOL
DeleteGreat stuff Dave! As Simon mentioned, spot on with the markings 😀
ReplyDeleteThank you Ivor, Google has made research a lot easier ! LOL
DeleteWow, most impressive and beautiful Joopa, excellent work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil, using the foam core method, makes bigger pieces more affordable ! LOL
DeleteAnd another scratch-build? Dude...you're the king! I never watched Rebels. I tried to watch the first episode, but I was drunk and fell asleep. That was years ago, but I somehow never remembered to watch it since. My friends all yell at me for not at least trying to keep up with Star Wars, so I should give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteOf course it goes without saying that it's inspiring work and a wonderful paint job! Best Joopa ever!
Thank you Keith, it's only fair on these challenges that I do scratch builds not just painting, otherwise it would be unfair on everyone else.
DeleteYou should give Rebels a try again, as it has a lot of information that leads into the Mandolorian, and the upcoming Ahsoka series
Very nice. You've certainly raised the bar in that not only do you paint but you make/sculpt your own miniatures as well. Say what you will, given a chance I'd try Joopa, roasted perhaps or in a Madras sauce if it is too gamey or a little off. After all, how can something with that many eyes not be delicious!?
ReplyDeleteThank you Ann, it certainly comes in handy being able to sculpt models I can't find, and allows me to complete entire groups that would only have a token gesture.
DeleteHaving tried all sorts of meat over the years, I'd certainly give it a go, but not because of the number of eyes as I really wouldn't want to eat a Tarantula ! LOL
I bet it tastes like Chicken, everything does you know!
DeleteActually Gator tastes like a really sweet pork, but agree a lot of other things do taste like chicken ! LOL
DeleteMore top notch sculpting and painting mate, how you do these so fast I really don't know. Sadly I have no idea what a Joopa is as I to never watched Rebel's I have however watched all the episodes of "The Bad Batch" so far, and it's OK (not the Mandalorian but not bad, Ironically!).
ReplyDeleteI might have been tempted to go back and give Rebels a go but I just don't have the time to watch the stuff I want to already without adding to the list!
Cheers Roger.
Thank you Roger, my secret is having a minimum of two sculpting projects on the go, and at least two painting projects at the same time, so when I need to stop sculpting on one before I put my finger in wet green I can move onto the second, and while both are then left to harden, I move onto the painting, or make another sculpting frame depending on what I'm in the mood to do.
DeleteIf you ever get the time to watch Rebels, would strongly recommend it, have been enjoying the Bad Batch so far, which has tied up loose ends on some story arcs from other series, and also giving a bit more information on characters as well

ReplyDeleteGreat stuff, Dave. I haven't watched Rebels (yet - I'm way behind on my SW animation) but your spider-faced worm-thing looks like the source material and I'm sure you could fit something like that into many other fantasy or sci-fi games quite easily.
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazel, your not wrong, could easily be used in multiple settings, so quite a versatile piece.
