JUGGERNAUT

The big project I'd like to get done for this years challenge is one of the 3 forms of Imperial Juggernaut that have appeared in Star Wars over the years, below is a picture of the three different types, the top one appeared in Revenge of the Sith on Kashyyyk in the Republic army helping the Wookies, the middle version has appeared several times, in bad batch, Rogue One, and comics, the last one appears in the Mandalorian, and is my favourite one, but would need to be a scratch build, so was going to be option 1 or 2.

I managed to find a 3D print on Ebay which would give me a starting point, and also give me all the wheels I needed, the basic kit looks like this

If I went for option 2 I could use it for Bad Batch and the time before the Death Star, so this was the preferable option, here is a detail picture of what it should look like.

To get a look close enough, I need to make a lot of structural changes, to the basic shape, and a lot of detail additions to bring it closer, it's not going to be perfect, but close enough for me. Here's where I've got so far.

I've been working on it in two sections, as both are quite bulky, and heavy enough without combining the two and combining the weight issue ! LOL as you can see with the top section I've changed the basic shape, to bring it more in line with the reference, this was done with 1 mm thick plasticard to make it structurally sound, and putty to f ill in any small gaps, for the detail panels, I've made them with 0.5 mm plasticard so they don't protrude too far from the surface, and greenstuff for small details and handrails. The windscreens were made from acetate, that was painted black inside before being glued in place. Once I've finished the last few details on this side, I get to replicate them on the other side ! LOL
The undercarriage came with four shock absorbers printed on them, which I added detail to one, then took an instant mould of it, and push moulded all the rest including the two that hadn't fully printed, and the two additional absorbers. The two ends have been started including the door, but still a way to go to complete them.
That's all for today, hopefully it inspires for your own plans, so until next time, stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave

  1. O! This thing is going to be huge! It's one of my all time fav SW ground vehicles and I am glad you went with version 2 from your pics as that's the one that best reflects the original Juggernaut I think when it was first introduced in the original West End Games Star Wars rpg game. (I think in the Imperial Sourcebook?)

I'm liking the additions and changes you've done so far. Great attention to detail Dave.

    1. Thank you Dai, that does mean I need to be extra careful on this one then if it's your favourite ! LOL I'll try to keep it as accurate as possible, with what I've got to work with.
As you can see I've had to modify a few details already, as removing some of the bits would make it so much work, for little reward, but at least the basic shape is more inline now ! LOL

    2. I checked my old sourcebook and the original Juggernaut had a weird tower toward the rear!

    3. I hadn't seen that tower before, I'd seen a smaller version, but that is extreme ! LOL

    1. Thank you Iain, yes it is a big old model, a Khorne one would be a lot quicker and less work ! LOL

  3. Oh wow, this is a beast!!! Is that Legion scaled Dave? It must be huge, but also wow! Amazing start.

    1. Thank you Michael, slightly smaller than true legion scale, but pretty close, I will try to remember to include a model in the next set of pictures I do, wanted to get an early start on this, as I had no idea how long it would take ! LOL

  5. Very bloody impressive, Dave. I've been wanting to print one of these myself, but my plan is to print it, then hopefully manage to assemble it and then maybe possibly manage to paint it. Nothing like the extensive mods you're doing here!

    1. Thank you Azazael, I think your option would be a lot quicker and easier, and less painful, as you need your sanity removed for this option ! LOL On the construction I found running a pin in at a 45 degree angle to strengthen the sections really helps, and makes a lot stronger bond.

    2. While I think about it, you may want to upscale your print, to make it more Legion scale true size ( when I put the door on the undercarriage big enough for a standard model to walk through, it didn't leave enough room for the rest of the details ! LOL).

    3. I don't have an STL for one of these yet, so it'll (eventually) be a matter of what it's like and table practically. 😉

    4. That makes a lot of sense.

    1. Thank you Mr. Martin, funnily enough I always wanted to make models for movies, too old and sick to do that now, but hopefully I can pass on some of my techniques and inspire others with their own modelling adventures in the mean time ! LOL

  7. Before I read this, I thought you were making some kind of 40k tank! I had forgotten about this vehicle and I admit, it is quite Star Wars looking at the same time. What you've got so far looks fantastic and it will definitely be imposing on the battlefield. Looking forward to seeing more as you progress on this project!

    1. Thank you Jeff, currently on more of a Galaxy far away kick, than grim dark ! LOL I noticed it was actually in the star wars comic you were reviewing recently, it pops up all over the place, just not for very long, and not the focus, like in Rogue One, when it's used as prisoner transport for Jyn. It's slow work which is why I wanted to get a head start before the challenge as I had no idea how long it would take ! LOL

    2. I did have a feeling that I'd seen it somewhere but I was thinking it was in the Solo movie in the some of the war scenes. At least I was somewhat close anyway!

    3. As the franchise very rarely focuses on anything in the background for more than a couple of seconds, they can easily be missed ! LOL

Oh this is just a brilliant project! :-) Has to rank with the Cantina and Jabba's Palace as far as I'm concerned! I'l enjoy following progress (or, more than likely for me, seeing the finished results and then working back through the posts).

    1. Thank you John, this one should be quicker than the cantina, and Jabba's palace Hopefully ! LOL Probably going to do some smaller projects inbetween working on it as well, so should have plenty of time for you to follow along ! LOL

  10. The clone turbo tank! I always loved this thing as a kid, can’t wait to see it painted. How big is it compared to other models? I know in lore it’s quite big.

    1. Thank you SD, the model is a beast, it's length is 45 centimetres, just under 18 inches, and the height without the wheels is 20 centimetres 8 inches, so a pretty large piece of kit ! LOL
