This distraction was totally not my fault, on Sunday my Daughter drove to our house for the first time, since passing her test, and brought up a couple of projects that needed working on. One I can't show until it has reached it's final destination, but I will take pictures to show when I can. The other was my son's statue of the Alien Newborn, it had broken in three places on it's legs and lost four fingers as well. This piece was the first he had bought from a Sci-Fi convention, so had a lot of sentimental value for him, he also asked if there was anything I could do to improve the paintjob of the model. Below is what the model looks like when in one piece with the factory paint job.
Now the Newborn was never my favourite model, but I wasn't going to do anything less than my best for my son, the first thing I did was add a wash over the original paint, to help define all the detail that is in the sculpt, then using Rakarth flesh, and Corax white, I worked up all the detail as well, hopefully my son likes the new scheme.
This model is 18 cm tall, so a pretty large model to paint, but glad to get it finished and repaired for him. Now back to these zombies, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Whilst I really rather enjoyed Alien Resurrection when I originally saw it (and its longer version), these days I always turn it off once the Newborn arrives as I've never liked either the concept or its design. Having said that though, you'd definitely done the model proud with your repairs and repaint, Dave. It looks excellent, and as deadly as I remember it being. I would expect your son to be super-happy with the care and attention you've given it. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, out of all the alien versions there have been this is my least favourite, and I too wasn't enamoured with the concept or actual creature, but as my son likes it, had to put in maximum effort. It was only watching the movie for reference, that I realised all the aliens in this movie were brown, for doing the detail on the base, although they still have the black carapace. I've sent him pictures, which he is very happy about, hopefully once he see's it in the flesh he'll see the total detail, as my photography isn't great ! LOL
DeleteThank you John, even with my own disposition towards the creature, the end result looks way better than the standard version ! LOL
ReplyDeleteEeeeek! Most scary!! (I mean, that's a compliment!)
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, it's okay I know what you mean, my daughter said it is even more grotesque now it's painted properly ! LOL
DeleteHave to agree with your daughter! It looks more grotesque now, but in a good way! Yea, it wasn’t my favorite movie or moment, but you did the model some justice! I’m sure your son will be happy with it! π
ReplyDeleteThank you Brian, indeed not a pleasant creature, from what my daughter said last night, he loves it, and keeps on about how much it resembles the film, and can't wait to have it back on his shelf ! LOL
DeleteYour son has very…unique… tastes in a favorites. Probably one of those Apple/tree situations. Nice work on the paint job though. I think. I’m not sure. I couldn’t look at it for long. ππ
ReplyDeleteThank you Stewart, indeed after growing up around me, he's actually pretty sane, go figure ! LOL Hopefully the brief look didn't burn into the retina ! LOL
DeleteThat is very creepy, Dave. I'm ready to see more Dark Eldar after this haha! My wife won't let me have things that are creepy on display (which isn't a problem really) and I think this would definitely be a no go in my household :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, in the main part of our house, we have very normal looking ornaments, all the cool (creepy) stuff is in my room so I get to see it all the time ! LOL Not that my wife doesn't like the darker side, just stops the neighbours thinking were serial killers ! LOL
DeleteI think th newborn looks more horrific than the original alien - job well done I'd say.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joe, wouldn't have been my choice in model, but wouldn't do any less of a job on it.
DeleteYou've definitely improved on the original painting, Dave. The reddish wash works really well with the pale skintones. I have to admit, the Newborn is a pretty decent monster, it's just a shame the movie it's in was such a mess.
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt, I left the original red glaze in, and then used Reikland flesh wash, which has a red undertone to it, to keep the red element. I always felt it could have been better from a design element, but then I like designing monsters ! LOL
DeleteGreat job on the repair and repaint of what I agree is a pretty ugly take on Giger's masterpiece. The fact that you managed to make it look decent is an achievement in itself! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you Azazael, I did see some of the concept drawings for the newborn, and they were so much better than the final version, with more of the original Geiger concept in there. My son has been showing the pictures to everyone who will look , so I think he's happy, which is the main thing.
DeleteI gave my son an action figure of this feller when he was small. He loved it, even though I wasn't a big fan of the character. No idea if he still has it, but I like your repaint and think I'd do similarly if my son asked the same of me. Good stuff mate.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dai, over the years it's been Dad's repair shop, for broken toys, at least with this one I didn't have to worry about moving parts ! LOL
