In a vain hope of clearing some space on the painting desk, I've finally finished up some swarm bases for my Lizardmen army, most are snake bases, but I did manage to make up a complete lizard base as well.
I based the colours on the Cayman Lizard, just made the colours a bit bolder, here is a reference picture of the real one.
Below I've split the snake bases in to two pictures to better show them off.
AS you can see there are many different types of snake on there, and here is some of the reference pictures I based them off, I went for snakes that were indigenous to South America .
You may notice cobra's on the bases and think aren't they from Asia and you'd be right, so to add variety I tried to find different colour schemes for them, below is the reference.
That's all for today, hopefully I can clear some more space on the desk, as long as I don't keep adding new projects, so until next time stay safe, and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Much like Doctor Jones himself, I frikken hate snakes. But these look good. From a distance.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dai, sorry for any discomfort caused, and at least these ones are a big distance away from you ! LOL By the way the TIE Interceptor you found arrived yesterday, many thanks for the search.
DeleteO crap! I didn't know you'd ordered one? :) Awesome mate - am VERY excited to see what you do with it.
DeleteIt was such a great find mate, and I am truly grateful for your search time, hopefully you'll like what I've done with it.
DeleteExcellent looking snake bases and always good to clear space on the desk!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain, these took me a while because of all the different patterns required, now if I could just motivate myself on the LOTR models I'd get quite a bit of space ! LOL
DeleteThese are wonderful, I love how nature teaches us, you made a gorgeous work with all of them
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, there are so many different colours in nature, that no one should run out of colour schemes ! LOL
DeleteI appreciate you sharing your reference photos with us. It helps see the inspiration and how well you painted all those creepy crawlers!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, this was one of those posts that the reference was just as important as the painting for the relevance ! LOL
DeleteThese look great, and I love the way you've used real world creatures as inspiration.
ReplyDeleteMuch better than the dull standard green snake some folks (me included, but I'll be changing that) often paint.
Thank you misterc, as Lustria is in the relevant area to South America, I thought it would be good to have actual snakes from that region, now some of the sculpts are more fantasy than realistic, but doesn't mean we cant use real colour schemes ! LOL
DeleteThere is nothing wrong with green snakes, I have a ball python on the base of my Coatyl, which is mostly green, I think the biggest trick is getting the patterns close, which gives them a more natural look.
Serious looking reptiles! The variety is really neat.
ReplyDeleteThank you DAM, even though most of them were sculpted as rattlesnakes, I chose to add as much variety as possible, so each base had a unique look to it.
Deletegood looking snakes. Of there were such a thing. Which there is not.
ReplyDeletesnakes are evil.
Thank you Stewart, can understand with where you live that being quite a problem, as your country has so many different varieties there.
DeleteAh I love them! The colors pop very nicely and the old metal sculpts have a lot of charm. Always great to see your Lizardmen stuff.
ReplyDeleteThank you SD, I do like the old sculpts, and tried to find interesting colour schemes that would add character to the bases, afraid this will be my last Lizardmen post, until I get some more models, so might be a while, as there are so many other things I wish to get ! LOL
DeleteOh no haha! What great timing on my part.
DeleteI'm sure I'll get a hankering to paint some more before too long ! LOL
DeleteYeah. Not sure I was entirely prepared for so many pics of deadly poisonous snakes staring straight out at my screen at me, Dave. LOL!!! What a colourful, if not somewhat disconcerting, post. I'm always in absolute awe as to how deep your research goes for your figures. I'd just be looking at them and think - a few different shades of green will do. You pull out an encyclopaedia on serpents, and paint in the stripes, dots etc. LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Simon, it seems a lot of people don't like snakes on here, so if I ever paint anymore, I shall put a warning label at the beginning ! LOL As Lustria is the equivalent of South America, I wanted colour schemes that would fit the region, and the style of each sculpt, ignoring the fact that most are sculpted as rattlesnakes, as I said earlier nothing wrong with green, just not as many snakes come in that colour compared to lizards, of which there are lots ! LOL I have a fascination for lizards snakes and frogs, and enjoy finding out about new varieties, and used to keep them as pets as well.
DeleteMe too, the depth of your research is always appreciated and your paint jobs spot on!
DeleteThank you Andy, there are such a variety to research, and I have too many favourites, but one of them would be the flying Gecko.
