THE ROOF, THE ROOF IS ON FIRE

Technically mine isn't but there is the one scene during a New Hope, where the garage roof at the Lars Farm is, hence the title. Yes I have finished another piece that I started for last years challenge, before getting distracted, The Lars Farm garage roof, for those of you that remember it started life as a smoke alarm, before I chopped and changed it around to resemble the Garage roof.

As you can see from the bottom picture I've also put in yellow lenses so when I get round to adding a LED strip I can light it up for games, picture was taken using the torch on my phone for this. So that's all for this brief post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Excellent use of the smoke alarm, Dave, and those LEDs are going to look awesome when lit. Great little project from an everyday household object.

    1. Thank you Simon, it's nice when a household item can be turned into a cool piece of scenery especially to match in with a very specific item from a film. Just need to find a cheap sorce for a small strip LED

Nice bit of re-purposing there, Dave! :-) I really am going to have to watch Star Wars again (it might be Episode IV A New Hope to some, but to me it will always be Star Wars)!

  4. This is a great idea for an old alarm and it really evokes Tatooine to me. I really like the lights inside too. That could be perfect for an evening or low-light battle!

    1. Thank you Jeff, my wife doesn't like walking round DIY shops with me, as I'm always spotting shapes and going that would make a cool . . . . ! LOL That was my thinking to, and it would add atmosphere to the board.

    1. Thank you Joe, do like to make the most of what's lying around, and give it a new life where possible, the LED scene has developed on a lot so would like to learn and do more with it when I have the time.

  6. Excellent use of junk, Dave, and now I really regret chucking out the old smoke detectors when we moved into our house LOL! I might have to look for some cheap ones... Looking forward to seeing it lit up with the LEDs!

  8. I don’t remember this from the movies but I like how it looks and it’s a very creative way to use an old fire alarm. 😀

    1. Thank you Stewart, it was only in Episode 4 very briefly and you could blink and miss it, and finding reference pictures is even harder ! LOL It has appeared in episode 2 as well, and has also appeared in the new series Obi Wan. Many household items have very useful shapes, it's just finding them.

  10. Yea, I don't recall it exactly but looks familiar. I wonder if they originally used a smoke detector for the model? I know that they had to get pretty creative back then with not much of a budget. Pretty amazing really. And here I thought the title of this post was referencing the Bloodhound Gang's song, haha!!

    1. Thank you Faust, this was one of the full size props they had on set, so no idea on what they used for the original, unless they actually fabricated it. Was actually thinking of the Talking Heads song "Burning down the house" which was the background track in "Revenge of the Nerds" when the Alpha Betas set there Frat house on fire ! LOL but the Bloodhound Gang one works just as well ! LOL

  11. That looks great, Dave! I've spent a bit of time running around on that very roof lately in the new Lego Star Wars game - so I actually recognised it when I first saw the pics! :D

    1. Thank you Azazel, it's one of those bits that is so in the background, that you think you recognise it, but not sure, unless you've been looking for it, like yourself.

    2. Yeah, if not for the playing videogame recently I wouldn't have picked it! :)

    3. In the Obi Wan series it actually gets more of a showing, including Luke escaping through a hatch in it.

    4. I do need to get around to watching that at some stage. Too much in the queue at the moment!
