SHOP TILL YOU DROP

One of the cool presents I got for Christmas, was a 3D printed shop building, which is perfect for Tatooine, from my eldest daughter. The print was of good quality, but the ridges were very pronounced in areas, this wasn't a problem as I wanted to add texture anyway. I tried wall filler, which worked well and easily stuck to the building. I also tried painting on liquid greenstuff, this stuck well, and is a technique that I will explore more on other 3D prints as I get them.

While my depth perception has been off, this seemed like the perfect project to paint, due to it's larger size.

Above you may have noticed some wanted posters on the back of the building, these were found off the internet, and then printed in a relevant scale, I have some others which I will add to other buildings at a later stage. I did add some staining and damage to the posters, to add to the effect, and once dry I painted a layer of PVA glue over the top, to help protect them.

Hopefully next time I can move onto something a bit more detailed, so until then stay safe and have fun !

Cheers Dave

  1. Very cool, especially with eyesight not at 100%! Only thing Id offer is that perhaps the metallic air intakes on the roof look a tad clean compared to the rest of the building?

    1. Thank you Dai, eyesight is getting better day by day, so should be able to do more soon. I think you may be right, that they could do with some more weathering, as well as the junction boxes on the walls.

  2. That look splendid, Dave, and great to hear that your eyesight is gradually improving. The Han Solo wanted poster is a particularly good touch imho.

    1. Thank you Simon, taking each day as it comes, and doing everything I was instructed to do. The posters were all found off the internet, and there were some very cool ones, do have the full set of Star Wars Rebels, and some Imperial promotion posters as well, for use later.

Very nice, Dave! :-) Texturing and weathered look have come out really well! Glad to hear your improving (I mean your health, not your modelling skills)!

    1. Thank you John, I was surprised at how well the filler stuck to be honest, as greenstuff has a real problem sticking to 3D prints. The health is improving a little each day, so I take each bit as a win ! LOL

  6. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather mate, the building looks a treat, as Dai said the metal bits look a little "new'ish" but do things rust on Tatooween?, the plasterwork look particularly good though. Oh and love the posters ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Cheers Roger.

    1. Thank you Roger, always under the weather mate, just the level of the storm that varies ! LOL Totally agree the metal work needs something extra, things don't seem to rust much on Tatooine, but do suffer from sand storms and pitting, so will look into adding some of that, thought the posters added another element to the piece, may add some graffiti on other buildings as I do them.

    2. Haha, that made me think of something that happened at work a few years back, the radio was on and I was "jigging" about (couldn't honestly call it dancing!) to some song when one of my workmates sarcastically shouted "Do you need the loo!!!", I turned around and said "Always, it's just the degree of desperation that varies, why?" Oh the joy's of colitis!! ๐Ÿ˜

      Cheers Roger.

  7. That's a great looking building Dave & a change of pace is always a good thing, on the metal work I grubby it up a bit as I think it looks to new & shiny' but that could just be the lightning :)

    1. Thank you Frank, the larger scale was a lot easier to work on, with only a few details that weren't too small, so certainly helped. Will definitely be revisiting the metals, maybe adding some dust, or/and pitting

  8. Most interesting! I like how you solved precisely the main issue with 3D printed buildings of this size, which is joints and texture. Pretty lovely thing :)

    1. Thank you Suber, strongly believe in sharing ideas, especially if it helps out a fellow hobbyist with the same problem. D prints are a great tool, but the ridges are still a problem on a lot at this time, as the technology get's better, I'm sure it will get eliminated, but for now good work arounds, can turn good into great.

  10. The shop looks fantastic! I know there are several places that offer Tatooine terrain, I think you'll be hard pressed to come up with much better results than that shop. Excellent work, mate!

    1. Thank you Jeff, have looked into multiple different sources of buildings including make some of my own, to add to the business, and found that the 3D printed and MDF kits, all need added texture to hide the construction lines, but can be a great basis, especially if you are limited on time or resources. I do have my eye on a few more prints, but will then move onto building some I think.

  11. Excellent stuff, Dave! The filler really worked to add texture to the walls, and the painting looks straight out of Star Wars :-) Glad to read that you're getting better, too!

    1. Thank you Matt, was worried it wouldn't stick to the print, but luckily that wasn't the case. Loads of cool reference shots to be had at the moment with the Book of Boba Fett, so glad I could match the colours. Each day I'm making an improvement mate, and that's all I can hope for.

    1. Thank you Joe, was pleased with the end result, but will change the metal parts to look more weathered and in keeping with the rest of the building.
