When I posted up my Rancor pit recently, Jeff mentioned it wasn't really complete without Malakili, well not to leave this section part done, I've built the missing character.
Above is one of the reference pictures I used to build the model from.
Above is my rendition, made from greenstuff, and some plastic rod, tried to get the colours as close as I can, and have used some washes and glazes to get the grime you see in the reference picture.
I've also got a Gonk Power droid done, it started as a Wizards of the Coast model, which I then sculpted on top of to get it closer to the original one seen in a new hope, on the Sandcrawler.
Next time I will be posting up the Season of Scenery summary, I've been waiting to see if Azazel had any more submissions, if he does I will post a separate posting for them. Now next month is normally Zomtober, but not seen anything on if this is happening, so thought I might do a challenge that will fit in with this called Apocalypse Me ! The idea behind it is whichever type of apocalypse you choose you can do survivors or antagonists ( Zombie, Post Apocalyptic, Alien Invasion, Natural disaster, or any other you can think of), you can do a single model, or a group entirely up to you, and if you really want to go all out, why not convert a model to represent yourself in your chosen apocalypse, thinking about the type of weapons or equipment you would need to survive. If your interested in this idea and want to take part let me know in the comments below. The challenge will run from the 1 st of October until the 31st.
That's all for this post, so until next time stay safe and have fun !
Cheers Dave
Awww, man! I JUST left a comment on Roger's site talking about how happy I am to be free of challenges for a while...and now you're making me want to take part in another! I have a bunch of post-apocalyptic miniatures I want to paint, but it's a back burner project you have now defiantly thrust onto my front burner, Dave! Stay out of my kitchen, man!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the Rancor Keeper had a name, Dave; but you have definitely done him justice from the usual great sculpting to the liberal griminess of the paint job. He looks like someone you would not want to stand anywhere near. Well done!
Thank you Keith, I may have had a laugh or two at the comments on Rogers blog, what with John asking him not to give me ideas about making the Season of Scenery 3 months instead of 2 ! LOL I'll try and stay out of your kitchen mate, by the way your running low on coffee ! LOL
DeletePretty much every character in Jabba's Palace has a name, even the Jawa's and Gamorreon guard, there's only one I know of that hasn't been named and that's the Aqualish that resides there. For his grimy appearance he does get very emotional about the death of the Rancor ! LOL
Malakili looks flippin brill mate and I do love me a Gonk droid. It's a shame you can't cast these for sale, you'd make a mint I bet.
ReplyDeleteZombtober.... Might be the first in years I don't participate in. :/
Thank you Dai, at least I've now got one of the humans for Jabba's palace done, and a basis for the Gonk droid to be tortured !LOL
DeleteCan fully understand not taking part, with all you have going on at the moment mate.
Ohh, that feels like completion... Nicely done as usual! I really enjoy seeing how you bring all these details to life :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Suber, out of all the humans in Jabba's Palace, this was the one I most wanted, so when Jeff mentioned it, I just had to get him done ! LOL
DeleteGreat work on Malakili (whose name I never knew till now) and he's the perfect model to get the rancor pit absolutely perfect.
ReplyDeleteI'm up for your October challenge — it'll be my ninth this year — so I'd better get on and buy some more survivors!
Thank you Matt, the original Palitoy/Kenner release just called him Rancor Keeper, the name was added later.
DeleteGood to have you on board Matt, and will work in conjunction with Zomtober, so you get to take part in two, for the same model ! LOL
Great work on the Rancor keeper guy, it's almost like you can smell hm. Well done too matching his appearance and colours, grime n all.
ReplyDeleteAnd nifty work on the droid too, very fdifficult to tell it's a conversion.
Thank you Joe, if you can almost smell him, I must have achieved a truly grimy look ! LOL Very high praise on the droid, it's come back to bite me at tournaments by getting marked 0 on conversions, when the whole army was actually converted ! LOL
DeleteHi Dave, it great to see that you been keeping the home fires burning while I took a break from all thing blogging, some fantastic work you turn out since I last drop in :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Frank, great to see you on the blogosphere mate. Might have made one or two little creations while you've been away indeed ! LOL
DeleteGreat bit of sculpting there mate! whenever I see him the movie I'm always reminded of his other "famous" role as Alan Basta*d's "Rick Mayall" friend in "The New Statesman", guess he was often cast as "Monsters mates" ๐.
ReplyDeleteAlways love a "Gonk" too and yours is a great conversion.
I am hoping to get a few "Zom's" done in October (Zomtober or not withstanding), so two birds with one stone (no pun intended), sounds good to me, oh and please don't make SSC three month's I don't think I could take it!! ๐
Cheers Roger.
Thank you Roger, been meaning to get round to this one for a while now, I also remember playing a slimy low life in a crime drama, but can not think of the name of it, there's a man who was obviously type cast ! LOL
DeleteGonk's are so often overlooked, it was nice to see the one in Bad Batch was given more character.
Great to have you on board mate, and as you say if Zomtober goes ahead a double win, if it doesn't then you still get one.
Malakili and the Gonk droid are both fantastic looking, Dave! I think Jabba's Palace needed that emotional guy :) I need to finish my current, never-ending project and once that is done, I was thinking of doing some post-apocalyptic terrain, if not a mini or two so if that qualifies for the challenge then I'm certainly in! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff, glad you liked him, as you inspired me to get him done.
DeleteI hadn't included scenery as not to scare anybody off after two months of Season of Scenery, but I don't see why not mate, happy to have you on board.
Nice work, Dave! :-) Truly a grubby-looking individual! I thought I'd already left a comment on this, but it would appear not! People will be reminding me next to pay back the money I don't owe them!
ReplyDeleteThank you John, I struggle with doing dirty, as I want to be precise, so was a good challenge. No worries mate, I've had to make sure when I see something to comment as otherwise I completely forget myself ! LOL As for the money . . . . . Just Kidding ! LOL
DeleteYou've captured Malakili's likeness to a tee, Dave, great skills - that Droid looks damn fine too!
ReplyDeleteThank you Justin, there's some other humans I've yet to do, as getting their likeness could be tricky, but will get round to them eventually. Can never have too many droids ! ! LOL
DeleteDitto to all above. Never knew him other than the dude with the big monster who cries when its killed. Super!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mark, he doesn't really get of air time in the film, but the expanded universe, books, and comics, have added more depth to the character, and he really did love his Rancor ! LOL
DeleteHi Dave,
ReplyDeleteLove the post. Almost feel sorry for him that the Rancor was killed, but only almost! Count me in for the Apocalypse Me October. I already had a number of Zombie Apocalypse projects planned for Zomtober so will drag these out. I am not much of a converter but I will see if I can find an old short, fat, and bald zombie hunter!
Thank you GP, he's certainly proof our pets are like family !
DeleteGreat to have you onboard for the challenge, and if your not a converter, it's not a problem, as it's all about fun, and clearing some projects.
