Last month and this one Ann has been running a model of magnitude challenge on her blog
annwycoff and I had hoped to finish my second dragon I'd sculpted for MDP but can't find it's base at the moment so it will have to wait longer, so instead I've painted up this Succubus model that's been sat for a while. Now obviously it's not the sort of model I would normally buy as the body has been overly exaggerated with tiny waist and enlarged bum and chest, but it was a surprise from my wife and children on one of our visits to Medieval Times in Florida, the children choose it as they thought I'd like the bat wings, and so it has sat collecting dust until now.
I would have liked to bent the end of the left wing up, but it's cast in pewter so that wasn't an option, I've used glazes and several other techniques to get it finished, and was pleased with the overall effect.
The challenge was to be at least Ogre sized or above, the model is 70 mm tall from toe to top of head, so should count.

Wow, that's a bit different! Beautifully done Dave, but how stable are those wings? Have you had to pin them?
ReplyDeleteThank you Michael, good to come out of your comfort zone every now and then ! LOL The model is supplied as a single piece casting, so haven't had any issues with the wings, which is great as Pewter is a terrible metal for pinning, as it tends to shatter easily

Thank you Roger, I think a large part is knowing your colours and washes and glazes, once your comfortable with them, anything is possible if you have a mind to paint it. Experimenting on the chess set and Frosties busts helped a lot

DeleteA surprisng post, considering the suject matter. It's large figures like these that show the true artists among our ranks, I would neer contemplate painting anything as large as this piece.

Thank you Joe, I used to be of the same mindset with the larger models, and had lot's sat around just waiting for the nerve to paint them. It all changed when I thought these are for me, so why worry what anyone else does, and just enjoy painting them. I still have the frustrations with them from time to time, but then who doesn't ! LOL
DeleteI like the veins you painted on the wings. Really nice mini and in my opinion, not as overly sexual as the sculptor could have gone with. I mean, she’s a succubus, a demon that lures beings with their beauty and Wiley charms and dooms their souls into the eternal depths of Hell! Not going to lure anyone looking like a devil dog! Lol
ReplyDeleteThank you Dai, and I see what you mean about luring people ! LOL That was always the thing I found with the early Keeper of Secrets, it was supposed to have alluring beauty yet had a face of a cow or squid !

ReplyDeleteThank you Ann, happy with how the wings turned out, but if the shops were open I probably would done more of a gradient of the black shading, but only had artists ink in the house which behaves very differently to Nuln Oil
DeleteI really like this model over all Dave but the butt is the part that I think looks wrong & even your fine paint job doesn't cover that fact :) I know hind sight is a great thing but if you'd have sculpted a coving over the butt I think you'd have a better model
ReplyDeleteThank you Frank, as with a lot of female models there are problems, but the biggest problem with this model is it's fragile nature of the Pewter, so decided to do a straight paint job on it, but agree with your suggestions
